Here are some tips to keep your Twin Cities home fire-safe.  Fire Prevention Week is October 9-15, 2016.  This is a great time to inspect your smoke alarms!  The video below shows how to determine the age of your smoke alarm.

  • Inspect your smoke alarms every quarter.  Make sure that they are dust free and test correctly.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.  To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
  • Replace alarm batteries once per year.  An easy way to remember is to replace the batteries when you set your clocks for daylight savings time.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and garage.  Inspect it monthly and replace as needed.
