While at a community celebration/festival recently, there were several booths set up for folks to get to know their “local” businesses.  Vendors and companies of all varieties were sharing information and making sales.

While most of the vendors were indeed local, what caught my eye was the amount of large chain home improvement companies on display.  Most of these companies are large national chains, not even based in MN let alone your local city.   A few of the tag lines that I noticed:

• One-day bathroom remodel!
• One-week kitchen remodel!
• Free labor or Free Installation!
• 75% off if you sign up today!

A few things to consider if you are thinking of hiring one of these companies.

• They aren’t locally owned and probably aren’t even locally operated.
• They use a slick sales process to convince you that their inferior products are top of the line
• They offer limited options/colors/patterns, and demand that you make these choices during your first meeting before they leave your kitchen table.
• They don’t support your kids sports team or the local food shelf
• Their profits go to shareholders, not to the local community
